Team SD Worx heading for La Vuelta Feminina with multiple goals

"Overall win would be nice"

29/04/2023

After a fantastic spring for Team SD Worx, the first stage race presents itself with La Vuelta Feminina. That also means the teams will start with seven riders for the first time this season. For Team SD Worx, they are Demi Vollering, Marlen Reusser, Elena Cecchini, Niamh Fisher-Black, Blanka Vas, Femke Markus and newcomer Marie Schreiber. "We have a nice mix of experience and talent at the start. With this group we want to compete for the overall win and hopefully pick up a stage win in between," sport director Anna van der Breggen is clear about Team SD Worx' ambitions.

La Vuelta Feminina has a challenging course, Anna van der Breggen knows. "It already starts with a team time trial, which doesn't happen very often. We have some girls who haven't done this very often. It will be important not to lose too much time in this discipline. Our classification riders Demi Vollering and Marlen Reusser have to get back into the rhythm in the first days and get through those stages as well as possible. The second and fourth stages contain a lot of curves and some interesting climbs. The centre of gravity of the Vuelta is obviously at the end. The fifth stage is quite tricky with some treacherous mountains. The penultimate stage also has some tricky climbs, but especially the final arrival on the Lagos de Covadonga is incredibly tough, thirteen kilometres at 7.7%."

The spring was wonderful, but with the stage races, a second part of the season presents itself. "In such a multi-day race, it is mainly about who recovers the best," warns team leader Van der Breggen. "I hope in the meantime that we can continue our form from the spring. We have several goals. Marie Schreiber is riding her first race with the team. For her, Blanka Vas and Femke Markus it will be a matter of gaining experience and seeing if they can be a help to Demi Vollering, Marlen Reusser and Elena Cecchini. Those riders carry the pressure and with them we want to get results in the stages. Niamh Fisher-Black can try to have a go at stage wins in their shadow. With Demi Vollering, of course, we are then also aiming for the overall win."

"La Vuelta Feminina forms an important goal for me this year," adds Niamh Fisher-Black. "I'm keen to see how far I can get in the general classification. And I'm hungry to finally win a stage. The spring didn't go smoothly. I had a lot of bad luck. Liege-Bastogne-Liège was a relief for me. I got confirmation there that I am good. Maybe that will just turn out to be a blessing in the skies that I had such a slow start and means I will be really good in the second part of the season."
