Demi Vollering broke down the door to the top in 2021. She had a magnificent year and went on to win a monument of cycling in Liège-Bastogne-Liège. She also triumphed in La Course and won the Women's Tour. And she finished third in the Giro Rosa. Still, Vollering does not want to get too excited. “I have to perform consistently for two more years before I truly belong to the world's best. Although this obviously inspires a lot of confidence for the future.”

Vollering is going through a balanced growth process. In 2019, she surprised everyone in the hill classics by immediately achieving top ten finishes in the Amstel Gold Race, Flèche Wallonne and Liege-Bastogne-Liege. During the coronavirus season, she continued in the same vein with third places in La Course, the Flèche Wallonne and seventh places in the Tour of Flanders and Ghent-Wevelgem. Last season, she won a monument for the first time in Liège-Bastogne-Liège. “The fact that this big win came early in the season has put my mind at rest. It freed me.”

Sporting director Danny Stam sees a future in the collaboration with Demi Vollering, whose contract has been renegotiated until 2024. “Over the next few years, we think Demi can grow into a rider who can follow in Anna van der Breggen's footsteps,” sporting director Danny Stam says. “She has already proven herself in the classics and she also showed that she can compete with the best in the Giro. She's essential as we look to build a top team for the future.”

In the coming years Vollering wants to focus on both the classics and the stage races. “The Tour de France is high on my wish list this year. It's close to my home in Switzerland, so I am familiar with the region. La Planche des Belles Filles is a very nice climb. I have a feeling it suits me. It's my dream to wear the yellow jersey. I think it would be great to inspire young children like that.”
