With Marie Schreiber, Team SD Worx-Protime has one of Luxembourg's biggest talents in house. "We were looking for reinforcement in cyclocross, so we have an extra asset alongside Blanka Vas and Christine Majerus. Marie excited us in the field with her strong start. She couldn't always pull that off last winter, but we were convinced we could make her stronger. If you ride like that in the field, you can normally also do well on the road. And it is also there that you get volume as a rider. So we thought a road campaign would also help Marie in the cross," said sports manager, Danny Stam.

Schreiber was surprised by Team SD Worx-Protime's interest. "I didn't even realise they were also looking for cross-country riders. I was really surprised when the best team in the world contacted me. But I don't regret my choice for a second. I feel I am developing well here, both personally and performance-wise. The fact that I am now competing for the same team as my compatriot Christine Majerus only makes it better. She was my role model when I was younger. That I can ride by her side in her last two years as a pro makes it all the more beautiful."

Marie Schreiber was immediately thrown into the deep end when she made her road debut at the Vuelta Femenina. "She had zero road experience. In the first stages it was difficult, but every day she got better and better," Stam looks back. "We had fun with her on the road. Marie is very mature for her still tender age. As a 20-year-old, she has made huge strides. The main goal, of course, remains cross-country racing. There too we are seeing progression, thanks to a solid road programme she is getting more power. She is young, but she is fierce. Hopefully she can turn the talent she exudes into performance. We are confident in the meantime."

Marie Schreiber herself also feels she has made strides. "I feel the difference after my road season. I used to fall back in the field after my fast start, now I can maintain a high pace throughout the first lap more often than not without going over my limit. The first road races were tough, but I learnt a lot. I think the tougher one-day races should suit me."

I did surprise myself somewhat with my performance in recent months. Things are going better than I expected. Those performances in the field also give confidence for the road season.
